Live link to boat
I’m looking for a solution to send a live video feed from a boat harboured in a river estuary (up to 100-200m from the shore) back via VoIP (probably either video conferencing or Skype link). So far we’ve looked into high power directional wifi and an RF camera system to bridge the gap to a nearby Yacht Club but these are a little on the expensive side (quoted between £400-£1,000 per day). We’ve looked into 3G but the latency and packet loss seemed too great.
Has anyone tried anything of this sort before and have any bright solutions? We have various cameras with HD-SDI, component and composite outputs. We have a BGAN sat kit as well but as the boat’s going to be rocking about this isn’t much help!

Hi Adam,
You might take a look at Mushroom Networks They’ve developed a box that allows you to bond multiple 3g broadband USB cards together to aggregate the total bandwidth. With their PortaBella 141 box, you can bond up to 4 3g cards together.
They also have the TelePorter. It uses the same 3g bonding technology, but it’s designed to take a feed directly out of a camera and stream it as h.264 using a transmitter/receiver system. I haven’t personally used the TelePorter, but either of these options seem like they’d be worth exploring.

As long as you are ok with everything being IP between the boat and land, you could try using two off the shelf Linksys WRT54G routers with DD-WRT installed on them, boost the transmitter to ~ 84mW (or whatever is a safe level for your application) on both routers and add a couple of Square GRID Parabolic Antenna’s should easily be able to get decent speeds @ 200m if you have line of sight and calm seas.
