What’s the best way to draw an animated picture using a Wacom tablet pen? I’ve tried “write-on” in Premiere, but, unless I don’t understand it, you have to move the drawing along by going one key frame at a time. I want to sketch something relatively complex over several minutes of video. Is there no way to get Premiere to record the drawing in something like real time? (Or by using After Effects? Or some sort of plug-in?) Maybe I’m expecting too much?

Camtasia 4.0 can capture your screen (drawing in Photoshop with the Wacom) and output as uncompressed .avi although only 24 bit.

This is really more an After Effects kind of thing. Vector Paint can be recorded live as you make the strokes. Holding the Shift key down while painting is simple enough. Give it a try. It is, however, only available in After Effects Pro.

Thanks much! I’ll try some of these suggestions this weekend. I do have After Effects Pro, so I’ll start with that.

On a related note: My next challenge in this project was to figure out how to record actions from a computer monitor (like whatever’s going on in a web browser). Is Camtasia the way to go, or are there other standard options? I would think this is a common task–but I was hoping to get full video quality (rather than the low resolution you see in some computer tutorials).

Camtasia is the way to go. Don’t try to edit it in a DV project though. Edit it in CAmtasia for the best results.

If you want a simple and free way to record your screen (although only to wmv) try Windows Media Encoder

Thanks much. So far the Windows Media Encoder has worked really well for my purposes. Haven’t tried the others yet (Camtasia costs a few cents!). Pete
