Live Capture, Non Control, with Time Code
Posted by Tucker Quenette on September 19, 2010 at 9:01 pmHello,
Trying to get FCP6 on my laptop to capture off a deck as a non-controllable device AND maintain the timecode on the deck.
I did a quick search here, and it isn’t looking too promising, hoping someone might have a solution as I am in a time crunch.
Thanks in advance,
T

That’s not possible.. you cannot acquire time code without some kind of machine control i.e firewire, rs422 or rs232. The machine control is what transfers the time code track from your tape to FCP.

September 19, 2010 at 9:38 pmThanks for the response, Chad.
Someone in our crew came up with the option to replace a windows laptop with Premiere about an hour ago and we are scrambling to see if we can make a MBP with FCP usable as it would save us a few hours in our preparation time for post.
I guess we will have to keep on researching and try again if an option becomes available.
Thanks,
T

September 20, 2010 at 8:02 amIf you have timecode somewhere in the neighbourhood, you can use a black box to convert LTC to 422, and have FCP look at that.
Besides black boxes, my latest version of LTC reader outputs 422 as well. You can run it on any computer you like, and it could run in the background of the FCP machine capturing.

September 21, 2010 at 8:33 amIf you connect over firewire, why not just do a ‘capture now’?

September 21, 2010 at 3:30 pmas a controllable device, capture now basically “hits stop on the deck” and fcp gives you an error message. as a non controllable device, the location where the decks timecode should be has disappeared and when you hit “capture now” you get footage that does not contain the deck’s timecode.
very unusual problem for me to not have a function in fcp that is a function available in premiere

September 21, 2010 at 7:01 pmsetting to “non controllable device” removes the timecode coming off the deck – this is the problem i am trying to remedy – i want to set as “non controllable device” AND maintain timecode, as i am able to in premiere
thanks,
