I need to create the effect where Light starts piercing through a solid consuming it. Can anyone just give me the basic approach and I will work to fill in the gaps …

You need to make the “opening” grow from nothing to, well, something. The “opening” could be a mask applied to a solid, then you animate the shape. Then you’d apply Shine to the masked solid. A background layer would represent the thing that cracks open.

You see? It’s sort of backwards, since Shine has to be applied to a thing, not a hole. It’s like taking a black dot over a white background, and calling it a black hole in a white thing.

I hope that made sense. It’s one way of doing it, anyway.

It does .. just didn’t know if there was an easier way or better way to put it, more defined way. One of the things is I want it to seep (sp?)through and then bust open…. But that does help. Thanks Steve

Well, the first assumption is that Shine has to be used when you’re using AE. If you had a 3D app, you could take the “realistic” approach and shine volumetric light through a hole … but that would be another forum. 🙂

You could also try making a fractal noise image (or precomped layer) then using that as a gradient map for the gradient wipe effect applied to a solid. Try the effect, and you’ll see how you can make a layer develop cracks and sort of dissolve away. You’ll have to pick the right fractal noise pattern, and possibly mess with levels, so you might want to precompose this layer rather than render it as an image … just so it can stay “live” so you can tweak it.

    Hope that helps …

What is the best tutorial to give me an overview of working with Fractal noise…

There seem to be so many. Try googling “fractal noise” tutorial, or search the COW.

    Here’s one …

No problem. The cell pattern effect (not sure of the name, I’m not on the AE machine) might also work, though the cells would probably be too regular.

In your Fractal Noise image, I suppose you’d want a network of bright threads between black blobs, with a gradual change from white to black. Maybe creating a field of bubbles with Foam could do it as well … ? Keep in mind, the image needs to be static, so in some cases, you might need to render and import a still frame.

Are you cool on the concept of a gradient wipe, where the wipe begins in the bright areas and moves to the dark areas? Does this whole thing make sense in the context of your project?

YEah sorta … I am taking a simpler route for time sake and dead line .. I
I’ll post a link tomorrow and you can tell me what you think
