Lion and HDV
Posted by Rijn Kwakkel on August 19, 2011 at 7:27 amIf you are planning to upgrade OSX from SL to Lion and you are working with HD material:
DON’T!!!!
HDV.mov files will not play anymore: not in FCP, not in QT, not in VLC. Something wrong with the codec.
At this time (20 aug 2011) there is no fix / update for this problem. And downgrade to SL is not possible!
If yoy still woant to try: first make a clone of your OS.

August 19, 2011 at 7:44 pmRijin,
you overreact, let me assure you that there is no problem with hdv codec in general, neither with any other one in Lion so far. You got yourself screwed up a little bit with upgrade.Sony PMW-EX3, Canon Mark II 5D, FCS3 in Moscow

September 6, 2011 at 8:26 amDear Mokaeff let me assure you Rijn is absolutely wright. It’s incredible Apple is not solving the problem. Hdv files will not play in OSX Lion and obviously not in FCP…incredible…I cannot work on a older project after I bought a new MacBook Pro, i’m forced to re-encode all the material in ProRes on another machine. Still no any update from them. It’s really clear Apple is not taking care anymore of all of the devoted professionals and looking only at the iPhone and Co. sales.

October 30, 2011 at 3:19 pmI too am having the same issues. It started with a bunch of “General Errors” when I got to that part of the timeline. I thought that was odd, so I went back to the original material on a backed up drive, same thing. Both computers running 10.7, and that’s the only thing that has changed.
This is seriously messed up. I am really wondering about Apple’s dedication to the professional market.

October 31, 2011 at 12:09 pmHi guys, just an update on the hdv/lion story.
I’ve solved the thing without re-encoding hdv in this way:You need a Mac with SnowLeopard or older Os with quicktime pro installed. If you open the hdv file in that quicktime ( quicktime 7 pro, not quicktimeX, that’s for dummies..:)..) and simply save it ( by pressing CMD+S ) the file then will be perfectly working on a 10.7 system. I cannot explain why, it’s something concerning ‘flattening’ the hdv file.
Now you’re certainly asking yourself how to save a houndreds of files..:)…With MpegStreamclip do a BatchList of all of your files, choose ‘Save As’ option in the export settings and give it a new folder where to put the files. MpegStreamclip will quickly create new files with same name like the original ones but finally ok for ‘Lion’.Anyway it’s incredible Apple hasn’t still fixed the bug.
Cheers

November 1, 2011 at 8:37 pmOK, now things are getting really weird! I tried opening this on my work computer, which is running 10.5.8, and I have never had a problem working from this machine before. When I get to those same exact files (the DTE firestore ones) it locks up. Reveal in Finder, can’t play them in Quicktime either. Everything else works fine.
I’m pretty doubtful that the drive is corrupted or anything. It’s specifically those files, and there others in the same directory that load up OK. If I try to open in Quicktime, I get “The movie could not be opened. An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie.”
Anyone have any ideas? Did these files expire or something? I can’t even open them with MPEG Streamclip to convert them.
Very frustrating.

November 14, 2011 at 8:42 amHi,
very strange that you have a problem on a older system..hmm…I had this only on a 10.7 system and with hdv material coming from DTE like yours….do you have the original files backuped? can you try opening them on this older os? can you try on another older mac?…if you can open on some mac try to do the operation I explained in my previous post.Ciao

November 21, 2011 at 6:22 pmI have tried multiple older machines, and found backup copies of the original files and they all act in the same manor. I can’t open them with Quicktime 7 Pro, MPEG StreamClip, nothing! It says “An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie.”
I’d be fine with converting them if I had to, but that’s not even an option. Anyone else having this issue?
