I’m at the point where I want to make level and pan changes on one track (out of 4) to a range of clips in a Seq. To do this it seems I have to unlink and un-Stereo Pair (in this case) to work discreetly on that one track. I’m doing this at the point where the overall edit is pretty fine *but* I probably will have to go in later and make cuts and changes that effect time. When I do, the ease of being able to select all tracks for trimming etc. with one click is gone, it seems I’m now required to relink the 4 tracks to do this. Is this the normal way people work or am I doing something wrong? (as you might guess I’m an Avid editor not used to what seem like extra steps of unlinking/linking)

Finally, the footage was captured from tape for me at a facility, I would not have made this footage with iso mics “stereo pair” is there a way to “un-Stereo Pair” the orig while it’s in the bin (before it goes in a Seq)?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Don’t know if you can do it at the bin level, didn’t seem to work for me just now.

I use the keyboard shortcuts to work with audio; I link and unlink as needed, and adjust each as it goes in. Its no big deal to go back and change things once you get used to it.

Select your two tracks and hit option L to pair and unpair. Its a toggle. I tend to keep actual stereo paired.

When selecting tracks that are linked, hold down option to just select a particular track, say just audio 2. Or (and this is how I usually work) turn linking off, and use option when you DO want to select all of a clips tracks.

As an Avid editor myself, I really like the flexibility of linking and unlinking. It just takes some getting used to, like all of the other differences, some better, some not.

    Hope this helps,

On another note; I’ve started enabling and disabling audio clips (select, then hit control B) as opposed to muting and unmuting, or soloing. Sometimes its faster…

The items in your bins are all instanced, not source media, so you can have your footage with multiple mono tracks, but you’re probably going to have to make them all yourself.

To do that, you’d throw the shot in a timeline, unpair the stereo audio, re-link the audio to the video (if necessary), and then move that media into a new bin.

Also, fwiw, I like to add ‘toggle linked selection’ to my keyboard, usually on the unused ‘/’ key. Very helpful.

Don, thanks so much for the detailed answer. I have to practice the technique but am already finding that when I go to re-Link or “re-Stereo pair” selecting clips on either side of a cut I want to trim, those options are grayed-out under Modify

So are you selecting multiple clips (i.e. the incoming and outgoing audio around the trim) at the same time? If so, they’ll definitely be greyed out. You have to pair and/or link one clip at a time.

Does that make sense? If not, maybe grab a screen cap of what you’re trying to do…

Rob’s suggestion about mono’ing your audio in the timeline and then creating a new instance of the clip is brilliant. It only changes the metadata; it doesn’t create any new media.

I’ve been searching for an answer to a similar problem but no luck as all the answers line up as above. I want my audio to be independent of the clips above it. Right now I have all these ugly red boxes highlighting that my audio is out-of-sync with the clips. I don’t care in this case. I don’t want to ‘slip’ or ‘move’ into sync as it would mess up what I’ve done. Tips?
