This is kind of embarrassing, but I have to admit in the last 4 or 5 years of Final Cut editing there’s something very basic that I still haven’t figured out. On roughly 1/3rd of the systems I edit on, the video and audio clips never start out linked and I have to highlight and link each of them on the timeline in order to have them trim or move together. On the other systems they are always linked to start out with and the linked selection button allows me to either have the audio and video move together or separately. Does anyone have any suggestions? Could it be something I’m missing in the capture settings?

    Thanks
    -John

Never mind, I just figured it out. It depends whether or not the linked buttoned is highlighted when you first bring the clip onto the timeline. Thanks for putting up with me.

You’re close, but not quite right. It doesn’t really have anything to do with whether or not the linked button is highlighted when you first bring the clip onto the timeline. All video clips with sync audio are always linked until you turn off the linked button, which turns off linking “globally” on the timeline, or until you highlight a clip or group of clips and manually (***see the explanation below) turn off linking for just those particular clips. When you turn off linking on individual clips they will remain unlinked even when global linking button is active, until you relink again manually. When I refer to manually unlink/relink I mean by activating the keyboard command in the MODIFY menu or doing the same thing using the appropriate keyboard command.
