linking 2 computers for editing fcp project
Hi,
I am editing a 24P project on a MacBook Pro running Final Cut Studio 6.0.1. My footage requires subtitles. I’m trying to figure out if I buy an I-Mac, can the translator work on the subtitles while I continue editing? I’m reading up on networking and file sharing but would like some advice from experienced users. Questions:1. What’s the best way do this?
2. Can I link these 2 computers so that I don’t have to keep dragging clips back and forth to the subtitler (140 hours of footage!)
3. Can 2 people/computers work on the same FCP project from the same time from 2 different computers?
4. All of my media and project file is stored on an external drive. Does this effect the networking/file sharing issue?
5. Must I buy an IMac for my translator, or can I use my old G4 (will it take OS 10.4.8, and will enough of FCP 6.0.1 run properly on it to do the subtitles in it?)

2) yes, you can have two computers read a single firewire drive. (one computer connects to the other over Ethernet and mounts the drive.) The drive needs to be fast enough, however, to serve video to 2 sources (like a G-Raid over FW800)
3)No. But he can work on a duplicate copy of your FCP project and export XML’s of his finished timelines which you can import at the end of the day

5) not sure. but I’d assume you can run FCP 6 on a G4.
