I’d like to be able to link multiple clips together in a timeline but without nesting them to a new sequence. Is there any way of connecting clips within a timeline?

    Thanks you guys are awesome!

Nope, that is in fact what nesting is designed to do.

Export as a self contained QT file, reimport that. But then you lose any and all link to the original files, in terms of timecode and reel number.
