  • Link audio with video track

Posted by Louis Stevenson on June 19, 2011 at 6:54 pm

I got flamed for making a thread about this a few days ago because it’s so simple, but I still didn’t get any advice so i’ll try posting it in FCP Basics this time and hopefully somebody will help a homeboy out.

Deadline on a project, everything is coming along great when suddenly, I click a blue video track on the timeline and it no longer selects the green audio track underneath. I used to be able to cut the video with the audio tracks using the blade, but now i have to do it seperate which adds a lot of time because the tracks also don’t link together anymore.

How can I fix this/avoid it for next time.

    Thanks

Highlight the video and audio tracks to be (re)connected (one video and audio clip at a time) and press “Command>L” to toggle link/unlink. Use “Option>L” to toggle audio stereo pair. “Control>V” will make a razor cut at the playhead. If no clip is selected it will cut through ALL tracks (regardless of clip links), if any clip is selected it will only cut that one, this can be done “on the fly”, or while the timeline is playing (FCP will temporarily mark your edit points until timeline playback is stopped, then it makes the cuts).

I have a feeling that, when editing, your use of the keyboard is pretty much limited to hitting the space bar. Your left hand should be flying across the keyboard using all kinds of time-saving shortcuts while your mouse just points at stuff…

    Print and study.

When you print all of the FCP Keyboard Shortcuts documentation, it will be overwhelming. Read through it and highlight the ones you think you will use often for easy reference. Maybe even print out your own guide with just the ones you want to remember.

Going over to the tool palette and clicking “razor” then going to the timeline and making a cut, then back to tools to get the arrow back… such a waste of time, all of the tools have a shortcut. A couple tool shortcuts that I use frequently-

    A is for Arrow

    B is for Razor (Blade)

    S is for Slip

T is for Track selection (repeat for each selection type)

    etc. etc. etc.

Thanks for the response. I do use keyboard shortcuts and the problem is Command L isn’t working.

It does add and take away the underlines to the video track, but not to the audio tracks. When I try CmndL on only the audio it doesn’t appear to change anything and the underline stays.

You’ve turned Linking off. CNTRL – L. It’s the chain in the top right of your timeline.

Glad you got it figured out.

Hi. Closest thread I’ve found to my need. Control L works for me to link a single video/audio pair. Is there a way to highlight and link multiple groups of pairs? I’m presuming FC would not understand which pairs should link with which, but I thought I would ask. I have hundreds of unlinked clips many timelines that need to be linked. Was hoping not to have to do each one individually.

    Wherever I am…I’m lost!

Boy, what I would do for the answer to this question…right now. I’m in the middle of a project that suddenly has hundreds of unlinked clips. I fear that you can unlink in mass (by accident), but cannot link in mass.

    Help! Anyone?

Glory halalooooja. This post also saved me from near hair loss from trying to figure out why I couldn’t get the audio and video to pair. Was going from modify to link, to cmmd L and then all it was, was the linky dude in the corner. Thank you guys. When in doubt Creative Cow.
