Funny, the Headlines that are not lined, don’t travel or shimmer,
but anything that has lines in the document travels or shimmers,
also on long shots of bldgs with straight horizontal lines.

I didn’t think this would be interlacing as it’s source is jpg not
    video.

    Help.

    Thnx.

    Sherwood,

That’s a very common issue in which horizontal lines and sharp edges appear to dance as they move across scan lines. Keep in mind, even stills get interlaced when you’re cutting on anything other than a progressive timeline.

The only way to alleviate the problem is to put a slight blur on the photo. So, add a gausian blur and experiment. Try .5% and render, then take it down to .2% and render — it’ll be a lot sharper, but may not get rid of your noise. Yes, the blur softens the image a bit, but keep in mind, only you have seen the perfectly sharp image, your audience will not be able to make the same comparison.

Gausian blur isn’t the best idea since it actually blurs your image in all directions. You only need to blur vertically, which is what the flicker filter does. Give it a whirl. If you want to blur in photoshop make sure your blur is directional (90%).

Several images are very low rez vintage photographs, so blurring
    wouldn’t work on those.

I have phutz’d with the dif de-interlace and flicker filters already.
    Helps but still a distraction.

Is there something I can do in AE?
Export the elements and recreate the movie and then reimport?

We’re talking about blurring 1/3 of a scan line/pixel. If your pictures are so low rez that that would make them look that different, then there’s no way that they’re creating ringing. Ringing requires so sharp an image that pixels definitively fall on one field or the other only.

In answer to your AE question, yes, AE’s subpixel rendering is light years ahead of FCPs and you’ll find that if you need to go that route it may solve your issue. But making changes becomes a bit of a hassle. You should be able to accomplish thsi in FCP and PS.

Deinterlace will essentially cut your resolution in half. It would solve the rining, but you’d be better off with a vertical blur.
