First day on c4d, bear with me.
I am doing some simple animation with objects. Every time I create new key frames it is defaulting to a spline tangent. I am going in and converting every key frame after it has been created to linear tangent.
Is there a more efficient way to proceed? Can I default the key frames to linear?

Yep, you can change the default behavior. Go to Animation>Record>Custom Preferences and change the type from Spline to Linear. Then, in the same animation menu, switch from Record>Default Interpolation to Record>Custom Interpolation.
