    Hi,

I want to make a master file with legal values after grading is
    finished.

Is there a way to limit the rendering output in DaVinci Resolve to legal values for HD files?
Or do I have to limit the values in a separate software like Avid DS,
    Smoke, etc.?

thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated

You can add an output LUT that will scale (or clip) DaVinci’s internally 0-1023 into 64-940. Davinci provides a DataToVideoScale LUT, but nobody has been able to tell me why the provided one seems to clip information in the shadows and highlights.

I recently used the “generate soft clip LUT” tool to create a LUT with 64-940 range and “scale” enabled. With that LUT and “monitoring in full range” the show looked identical to how it did without the LUT and “monitoring in scaled legal values” was enabled.

That LUT should be applied to any file outputs (I only have tried it with DPX though)…

The davinci limiter seems to do the trick. But adding supers, flares and comps can change that.

We just finished a McDonalds TVC (35mm/red to resolve to smoke) the final output on the smoke (via AJA) was showing serious gamut red issues (on bm ultrascopes) mostly on the maccas furry red end frame.

We run everything off to hdcam-sr via the Harris DL-860p legalizer. It’s bullet proof and never had a failure/ tech reject! Best investment we made (other than our davinci that is).

    Cheers

    Thanks for the help.

I’ve tried making a soft Lut with ‘scaling’ on, but Blackmagic’s Ultrascope shows me some gamut errors.
The clipping is happening but it looks like that it doesn’t clip everything to the correct limits.

Thats a bit frustrating, so I think I’ve to go with another software or hardware to do the limiting…?
