limit to SATA connections in mac pro? mac pro freezes on startup with second e sata card
Hello everyone,
I have a mac pro 2.66 ghz, with a blackmagic card, a second monitor card and a sonnet 4 ch SATA card. It’s running 10.4.8. I just purchased a startech 2 port esata pci-express card (which went into slot 2, the only free slot) and the machine now won’t even start up. Almost instantly I get the ‘you must restart this mac.’
Removing the card and everything starts up fine. There are NO drivers that came with this – Startech says they are not necessary for 10.4.
I’m wondering
A) I have reached a limit in number of SATA connections – already have a 4 channel card installed (a sonnet) connected to a RAID
B) there may be a different slot arrangement that may work better?
C) sign of a crappy card
Anyone else troubleshooting installing ESATA cards?

They might be competing for the same driver. You might also be exceeding the power limit on the PCIe bus.
