That would most definitely work, and would be great if could be found for free or cheap.

I still think it’s overkill though. If one is only hanging PAR cans or similarly-sized fixtures, I’m not sure why anything more is needed than one pipe hanging on each of the ring’s four sides… though real trusswork would look cool, if seeing it counts at all, or is an element of the visual production design.

I think yes, it’s part of the ring aesthetic to have a trusswork light grid. Besides holding PAR cans, it make s a great place to park a few go-pros and shotgun mics as well.

I’m only half-joking, but he should budget for a fogger/hazer as well, to make the lights stand out. Back in the day, you could count on the tobacco smokers to do a lot of that work FOR you.

If I were looking for way to do this ‘on the cheap’ I would probably budget a minimum of $10,000 for some sort of lighting grid.
There are many ‘improvisational’ methods to rigging the grid you would need, and if you are a gambling man feel free to do any of them.
The best advice I can give you is to make sure you have plenty of liability insurance.

Just as an aside, and in no way jumping on you for having higher standards than this project allows, I admit you make a good point about the insurance,

…then again, having the insurance, even if you went the high-dollar route and bought state of the art trusswork, cost no object… still, accidents can happen, even with “pro” gear. Fate is random. And you can have the most expensive and awesome gear fail, just as often as something improvised and “lashed together”. IMO It’s more about the skill and care of the gaffer putting it together, than the actual cost of the materials.

Did you ever get a setup going for your ring lighting? Trying to figure out a setup myself.
