I’m not a fan of “fix it in post”, in most cases, unless I’ve got no choice. So here I am, with no choice.

For reasons I won’t go into, I couldn’t bring my light kit to a shoot last week. Predictably, I have a bright background and dark subject. I’d like to brighten up my subject and dim the background. Is this something I can do with the Lighting>Spotlight app or is there a better way?
    Thanks.

    Can you post a screenshot?

Generally, my advice would be to separate the foreground and background and treat them independently. Spotlight won’t offer you much control; soft masks would probably be a better choice, but keying or rotoscoping might be better still.

You can easily balance that out with some curves and a mask from right inside Premiere. Put the new Pen Tool to work. Nice big feather. It’ll be fine.

Or put Speedgrade to work. This is where it excels. Might even be able to separate skin tones through a secondary grade.

New pen tool with tracking will work wonders with that clip. Use the levels adjustment on the foreground.
