Lighting & LCD screens
We’re going to be replacing our outdated TVs in the studio in favor for LCD TVs in our main studio. This is a news set with desk, so the lighting configuration is fairly set. Unfortunately, we are dreading the reflective nature of the screens. Does anyone have tips or tricks to limiting or eliminating the glares and reflections? Thanks in advance.

In general, I find LCDs have less reflective problems than CRTs. For one thing, they are flat surfaces rather than curved. For another, they are not hard glass. If you eliminated the reflections on your CRTs you are probably going to be just fine.

I have designed lighting for news sets and LCDs are a godsend. It takes little tweaking to find the correct angle to avoid reflection/glare. I had to light one set a few years back with a 52″ CRT, not a flat screen, in the center of the set. Talent sat next to the monitor. They were upset when I had to raise the height of the keys to avoid reflections. Talent ended up with less than ideal lighting and the grid was full of flags.. The client’s production chief would not return the brand new monitor in favor of a flat screen crt even though the cost difference was minimal. He did not want to accept that he made a mistake. I’m glad those days are mostly gone.
