I’d like to know how to assign lights in 3d space to a specific layer so that I don’t affect any others. I’m trying to make a pattern on a wall that I’ve imported but when I add a new light, it affects not just the wall but everything else in my comp.

    Thanks for your help

Place the 3d layers/lights/cameras that you want to go together in your comp, with no other layers between them. Then place a 2d solid with zero opacity above and below your 3d layers. This way, These 3d layers act as their own separate 3d “universe.”

PS – I think you could probably use 2d null objects instead of 2d solids with 0 opacity, but you will have to try it out to be sure.

You can always set a layers material options to not accept lights.
Select the layer and type aa (two “a”s to reveal the Material Options. Turn the layer’s accept lights to off. Or adjust how it responds to lights.

Also, I’ve built a graphic in Photoshop CS2 and one of the layers is a gradient.

It’s set to 720X480, RGB, 16 bit and when I import it into After Effects the gradient layer is imported however the colours for the gradient are not seen.

    Any ideas why?

    Thanks
