Could someone recommend a system that could work for us.

Since we have a load of 8′ c-stand and the sand bags to go with them, I’ve been thinking of a safe / affordable way to build a lighting grid, as well as a sound booth for location work.

We are only talking about 10 lights max all around (likely arri 1/2k and kinos), 4 pipes all around and one more above center.

Any recommendations on piping and clamps?

    Thanks,

This may or may not help, but I am a huge fan of the Manfrotto Auto-Poles. These work vertically or horizontally, and you can add extensions to make the span a greater distance. In my youth, we used them extensively to throw up an “instant light grid” near the ceiling of a room without needing any light stands. Moreover, we could assemble our instruments on the floor, then lift the pole into place and lock it in. The things have a down side in that they don’t hold as much weight as a truss or a DJ’s lighting tree. but they are inexpensive and versatile, for all of that. We would hang maybe up to five Lowels on one sometimes.

sound on location – VO… get some furniture pads and throw them over the C stands, with the arms at 90 degrees to the stands… add some grip clips… you can put these on 3 sides or so of the talent…

as far as a grid… I’d refer you to the Gripping forum on the cinematographer.com board…

    and this thread in particular

basically just buy or scavenge semi-lightweight pipe and bolt it to the girders in your ceilings… use hardware – not rope.
autopoles are a bit pricey and C stands are not meant for this, will be unsafe, just get in your way, and be better used elsewhere.
