Hello – I recently made the fatal mistake of filming my foreground subject standing in the shade with a very bright sunny background – as a result his face is darkened almost to the point of not being recognised! Does anyone know of a technique to resolve the darkened foreground subject without resorting to lightening the whole picture? Ta – Phil

To isolate a shape for manipulation, you need to build a bezier mask.

However, if the subject’s face is very underexposed, the information is just not going to be there to bring out.

To add to Gary’s suggestion, do a bezier mask around the person. Hopefully they’re standing reasonably still so you don’t have to move the mask very much.
Duplicate that track, click the “Compositing Mode” icon in the new track header and select “Screen”. If this isn’t bright enough, duplicate the new track (and again if you really want to).
As Gary said though, there might not be enough information there to do a whole lot with so be careful doing this.
