I have a normal looking clip in a timeline.
If I output it to ANYTHING – through Compressor, QT conversion, Mp4, h264, QT movie… anything… the image appears considerably lighter than the original. The only way I’ve managed to correct this at all is to up the contrast and decrease brightness in the output module, but the image then isn’t quite the same. I haven’t ever noticed this before, but maybe it’s because I haven’t used this new computer to output anything. Movies rendered in After Effects, look great, but when I then try to convert to anything else, even just from the QT player, I get the lightened image. ANy thoughts?

Well, the first question is what are you viewing your FCP output on? You should be using a proper CRT or LCD broadcast monitor.

Are you exporting in QuickTime as opposed to QuickTime conversion?

Regardless… and it’s a new iMac 27 inch… I’m looking at both on the same monitor. The problem happens when I output to ANY new format or just to another QT movie.
Interestingly, I just discovered that if I bring the “bad” exported clip BACK into FCP, it looks fine. So… it’s QT player that must be the problem.
