Light Streaks Through Letters
I created some 3d extruded text using the proanimator plugin for AE. I am trying to use the light streaks tutorials on here by Andrew Kramer to create a light that will travel around and through the letters. How exactly would I do this? The tutorials really focus on random movement which I don’t want. I know it may take a while to do since I actually want the light to move through and not fake it. My goal is to follow the light streak as it moves through the lettering using the camera in AE. Any help or suggestions would be great.

It isn’t possible to integrate ProAnimator layers and AE 3D layers without faking since they are in different 3D worlds. Most of the time you can fake AE layers moving around ProAnimator layers by splitting the AE layer and moving it in front/behind the ProAnimator object at various points in time. For more complex moves you may need to consider doing it all in a dedicated 3D app.

Alright fair enough. Is there a specific 3D program you had in mind, or can you recommend one? I am new to all this so this is my way of diving right in. By the way, thanks for the help.

Maxon’s Cinema 4D has a great reputation for ease of use and tight integration with After Effects. That’s my recommendation.

Not too sure which plugin Andrew used but take a look at this AEP from Trapcode called Bend from this URL – https://www.trapcode.com/products_3dstroke.html.
The trick is to use the Z-Clip Front and Back values on two identical layers – one below and the other above the object you want to swirl around.
