  • Light passing though Evolving Fractal Noise

Hello, Creative Cow! Been a while since I have been here and looked for a similar thread but either overlooked it or it wasn’t there.

basically I remember seeing an effect that involved generating fractal noise on a 3D solid and creating a light to shine through it. In the case i am referring to, it made it look as though beams of light were piercing through the surface of a body of a water.

I tried to create a random fractal noise layer and do the same thing with a light, but could not get the light to shine through it when I aimed the light towards the layer from the rear. I am off and on with AE and may have omitted something very basic. Using fractal noise and a light, how would you pros achieve this effect?

Thank you in advance for educating the ignorant! lol

animation preset has that exact one.

Interesting, i am using CS2…which one would you be referring to? Can’t seem to locate it.

Hey Chris, I found what youa re talking about but i am not merely looking for the water effect. You know how when you are beneath the water surface on a bright day you can see the rays of light pushing through and into the body of water? What I saw before was that exact effect…Fractal noise as the surface and a light positioned from behind. I even tried with the preset and can not achieve the “rays” that would push through the surface

[The Venninator] “Using fractal noise and a light, how would you pros achieve this effect?”

You would not use a light to achieve this effect. Lights in AE do not allow you to create volumetric effects.

There is a 3rd party effect from Trapcode by the name ‘Shine’ that does a good job of what you’re asking.

However, you can also do it with any number of the Radial Blur effects included in AE (use the ‘zoom’ mode). You can create fairly complex looks with this technique, but it will take some creativity. You could, for example, pre-compose your animated fractal noise, then place two copies of that pre-comp in another comp and apply CC Radial Fast Blur to the top copy and set it’s blending mode to ‘Add’ or ‘Screen.’

If you want the lighting to interact in a 3D manner then it gets a little more complicated and requires some knowledge of expressions. If that’s the case you might want to ask on the expressions forum.

Thank you Darby! It was maybe a year ago when I saw that tutorial, so you may be correct. However, I have it in my head that no expressions were used. But to create volumetric lighting I may be incorrect. Again, off and on here. Thanks for the help and guidance!

You don’t need expressions to create a volumetric look, but if you want the light rays to appear as though they are originating from a point in 3D space (as opposed to a point on the layer) then you will need some expressions.

This tut would let you have full manual control over the fractal controlled vol. light in case you didn’t want random movement. thx Aharon for the video.
