June 13, 2008 at 11:31 pmYou can make a light an adjustment light.
In the timeline stack order, place the light above only the layer that you want it to light, and turn on the adjustment layer switch (in the timeline – looks like a half black half white circle). When you do this, no matter where it is in 3D space, an adjustment light only lights the layers that fall below it in the timeline. Other lights will effect your layer, but that light will only light the layers below it in the timeline.

June 30, 2008 at 12:38 pmthanks Aharon – exactly what i needed. In fact i tried putting the light in the right place in the stack – i just didn’t realise i needed to hit the adjustment layer button for the effect to do what i needed!
Oh well -i’ll know next time, as i managed to complete the effect using the nested precomps.
