Light Illusion
Anyone ever had experience with light illusion with the gamma curve change for Canon? The point of it is to change the gamma curve of the footage coming in to the camera so that you have more information in the highlights and the shadow. Bringing the footage into color, it looks like the footage has that, but that the gamma curve has changed and flattened out the color that was recorded, so now I’m actually missing color information that was already there. Then in highlights, the camera seems to have just made up information, putting bring yellows and blues in other areas that would normally be white (or at least closer to white), like the eyes and teeth.
I don’t see the point in using this gamma curve, now that I am working with images the skin looks off and salmony, etc.. Unless I’m missing some balancing feature in Resolve? I’ve tried playing around with the gamma curve, to no avail. There are grey cards that I will have soon of each scene, but somehow I don’t think it will help too much.

Hi William,
As we have discussed separately, the Gamma Curves are monochromatic in operation – they have no ability to alter colour in themselves.
The only way for colour to be altered is if additional camera settings have been adjusted, or if there is some form of colour non-linearity within the camera, causing colour shifts if/when the gamma is adjusted.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have a problem with the camera used.

In my experience with shooting and coloring the Canon 5D (mk2 and mk3) with curves installed (both LI and Tech) the big limiting factor is that the camera is just not a very good video camera. In video mode they are noisy in the blacks and clip very easily due to the very narrow latitude. So you may be having trouble that is due to the additional camera setup issues or the limits of the camera with the scene that was shot.

Hi Robert, it is true the Technicolor Gamma Curve does indeed reduce the camera dynamic range significantly, which is a real problem.
The LI curves do not do this.
The difference is outlined on the EOS Gamma Curve page of the LI website, and is well worth understanding before using the Technicolor curve as in my experience it does indeed cause real problems!

The camera never had any dynamic range to begin with so any reduction is pretty bad.

Indeed!
It’s why I made sure the Light Illusion curves do not reduce the data range at all, unlike the Technicolor curve.
