I have a logo that I want to shatter. Before it shatters I want a tiny amount of light rays coming from behind it. As it shatters I want light rays to pour from in the cracks leaving just the light shinning into the camera. Does that make sense? I’ve been playing around with it but can’t seem to get the light effect to work. any ideas? Thanks guys

You might see if Trapcode’s Shine plugin can produce the kind of effect you are looking for.

This technique may not be the most realistic way, but it certainly works. Create a solid , with the color of light you want to use. Put it behind the shattering footage, and change its (the solid’s) transparency to around 40-50%, although you’ll have to play with this setting. Next, apply the CC Radial Blur Effect, and play with the settings, until you get something you like. You will have to key frame the solid footage in order to make the solid disappear by the time you footage is completely shattered. Hope this helps!

Shine should be applied in an adjustment layer over the entire clip, so it can “read” the brighter background layer, and also appear over the shattered solid. Try setting Shine to “add” mode, and apply Shatter to a black layer for best effect, over a white solid in the background.

Three layers: adjustment layer (shine), black layer (shatter), white solid.

If you don’t want to spend money on plugins, AE is perfectly capable of doing this with the stock effects. It’s just as easy as pushing a button, you have to be willing to experiment. You’re looking for Light Rays and Light Blast.

see theanvel.com for some samples altho he’s removed almost all of his freebies.
