  • Library Will Not Open ???

Posted by Ken Bennett on December 10, 2019 at 11:46 pm

After working on a project yesterday, today this Library will not open! Other Libraries on the same drive open OK. When I attempt to load this Library, FCPX’s interface disappears altogether. Then I’m asked to Reload said Library. When I do FCPX opens but not Library is loaded.

How do I get the Library back up?

Also none of the backups from yesterday or from Sunday will open either. Does that mean all that work is GONE! What good is a FCPX backup if it can’t open either?

I’d see if you can open FCPX with cmd+opt held down to delete your preferences. Then see if you can open the library. If not, try again and keep hitting the home key to make sure the playhead goes to the beginning before it tries to cache up whatever frame it’s stuck on that either has a bad plugin or frame, etc. Then if you get it open, delete your generated media files for that library.

By default FCPX backups are in /Movies/Final Cut Backups. As a safeguard copy that entire folder to another drive to preserve them.

If you have Time Machine or any other backup app, immediately extract and save an earlier version of the problem library.

What version of FCPX is this, what version of MacOS, what hardware? Is the library and media on local storage? Is the drive formatted HFS+ (MacOS Extended Journaled) or APFS? In general FCPX libraries should only be used on those partition types. Those are journaled and use write-ahead logging or similar methods to safeguard file integrity.

Make sure all disks have sufficient free space. After saving the FCPX backups to another drive, run Disk Utility First Aid on that drive. If it’s the boot drive this must be done from within MacOS Recovery: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201314

    FCPX 10.4.8
    macOS Mojave
    iMac 27, 3.5GHz Intel Core i7, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3

Library and media are on external RAIDS. No issues with any of the 4 external drives, 2 external RAIDs or the Mac Drive. Free space is not an issue. All other Libraries across the system open fine.

Talked with Apple Support and did a bunch of testing. It has now gone up to the next level in Apple Support. Waiting to hear back from them.

Otherwise, it’s a sunny day in SoCA.
