LH component input – off to the left
Posted by Chris Hall on March 23, 2006 at 12:17 amHi all,
I’m trying to capture analogue component from a DVCam deck to a Kona LH in PAL. I’m capturing 8bit uncompressed. The picture is shifted off to the left slightly so I am missing part of the picture on the left and there is a small black band down the right hand side of the screen. Has anyone else seen this and is there a way to adjust this to get the picture in the middle of the screen?
Thanks
Chris

March 23, 2006 at 2:00 pmCan I ask why you’re capturing component analogue of DVCam?
I’m sure there’s a good reason but I’d have thought that going firewire would be by far the easiest method.
I work like this and have no probs. If you need 10 bit for keying then try putting a Nattress chroma smoother on your footage and do a software uprez. I’ve had great results like this. And you get the convenience of Firewire transfer.
Otherwise – check your referencing.

March 23, 2006 at 11:12 pmHi,
Well idealy i would like to capture firewire but I have a combination of DVCam and Digibeta material. So i can offline by taking in the DVcam via firewire and the Digi via SDI through the Kona converting to DV as I digitize. Then I can edit in a DV timeline.
But for final output which is to digibeta I have found that playing a DV timeline out through the kona SDI to digibeta produces poor quality pictures, particularly in the reds. Thats why i need to take in component.
So are you saying that I can convert the timeline to uncompressed, render and then output and it looks good? I was wondering about this and I shall do a test. But I suppose the Digi material will not look as good as if I redigitize uncompressed.
I’d love to get this workflow sorted out.
Thanks

Ah, if you’re mixing footage then things are different.
See if your system can handle editing DV in 10bit timeline without having to render (mine can as long as there are no heavy effects) then you can capture DV over firewire, mix it with your Digibeta at 10bit and before you output back to Digibeta just render all the DV footage.
If you have more Digibeta than DV then this may work for you.
If you like to digitize the Digibeta as DV and then conform the Digibeta at the end, then DV over firewire is for you, too.
I did some subjective tests with DVCam (DVCam captured 10bit over SDI, DVCam played out over SDI from card, and DVCam software uprezzed by rendering in a 10bit timeline) and found that the SDI captured footage and the Software uprezzed were indistinguishable.)
This was great news for me because it meant no conforming for the OnLine, I simply drop my final sequence in a 10bit timeline, do correction and graphics in 10bit, render (20mins for 23min show) and output to Digibeta. Bingo.
Hope this helps.

March 24, 2006 at 11:27 pmHi Alex,
Thanks for your help. However I tried to place a DV clip in a 10bit timeline and generally it looks ok but on bright reds I find that I get slight horizontal lines appearing in the red part of the screen. I only see it when looking at a component monitor, if viewed in composite it looks ok.
It seems like the dv to SDI or DV to component conversion is not that good. Are you working in PAL or NTSC?
If you have time maybe you could try looking at video with bright red areas and view the component out of either the Digi deck you are feeding or the kona component output.
That is, if I take the DVCam video with red in it and dub directly to Digibeta then look at the component out in a component monitor it looks fine. If I digitize in DV via firewire and play from either a DV timeline or 10bit rendered timeline and output SDI to digi and look at the same output from the deck it has these horizontal lines in red colours. If I digitise component from the DVCam deck to uncompressed the picture looks fine.
I would love to get this working. Maybe its a PAL thing.
Thanks,
Chris
