  Levels not working

  Hi, I’m having some trouble with an image in photoshop. It’s a greyscale image and I’m trying to adjust the levels bring up the highlights and midtones. In the levels dialog box I can do this and the preview looks just like I want it to but when I click OK the image just jumps back to how it looked before I applied the adjustment?? Can anybody tell me why this is happening? Please??
