The Ayato example used card dance to achieve his/her look. You’ll need to RTFM for the exact particulars, but basically Card Dance is using a Greyscale layer to offset the z depth of the letters. For best effect you’ll probably need to use a monotype font and set the grid in card dance to match your letter spacing. Next you’ll create your grey scale map too offset the letters. That will be you biggest challenge, to create the greyscale map in such a way that some of your letters aren’t split in two.

You might also think about using Shatter, like in this tutorial:

    https://creativecow.net/articles/simpson_mark/text_shatter1/

You should be able to use your PS files, or modify them to be like the AI files he uses. You need to make a Shatter Map (White letters on black).

An alternative, fast and easy, is to make your newspaper all with AE’s text tool (you can use wingdings for shapes also), and to use one of the animation presets,
like “Raining In Characters” or “Drop In Characters” (see the help files, “Creating and Animating Text 6.5>Gallery of Text Animation Presets”.
