Letterbox or Squeeze?
Posted by Robb Stan on March 28, 2007 at 12:16 pmWhen shooting in the tape mode, what is the difference between the “Letterbox” and the “Squeeze” setting on the HVX200? I want to shoot 16×9 widescreen.

March 28, 2007 at 3:10 pmIf you want anamorphic footage, choose squeeze and work in a 16 x 9 timeline. If you want 4 x 3 footage with a lettbox “look”, choose letterbox and work in 4 x 3.

April 21, 2007 at 8:45 amThe difference is in the output signal of the camera.
Both letter box and Squeeze are 16:9 but letterbox will make it possible for you to view the footage on a 4:3 monitor with black boxes, but Squeeze will output signal to a compatible widescreen monitor viewing the entire image in 16:9.
There is one thing which you have to keep in mind. The black bands will be recorded on tape, and FCP does not recognize them as 16:9 footage, so will input it in a normal 4:3 Clip. If however you try to inport footage shot in letterbox mode in a 16:9 sequence, you end up with double 16:9, a letterboxed image in a 16:9 ratio and that’s what you don’t want.
So in that case I would prefer shooting in Sqeeze mode while shooting in 16:9good luck
