Leopard and Final Cut CRASH
Posted by Pierre on November 7, 2007 at 2:39 amJust loaded Leopard onto my Quad Powermac. Running the most current final cut studio.
When I open a project everything looks good… then at the last moment when I’m waiting for “preparing display”, final cut crashes.Any ideas?

November 7, 2007 at 2:45 amDid you do a clean erase and installation of the new operating system?
All the best,

I can’t erase anything on my disk though… I can “re install” but that’s not the same is it?”No. When you upgrade from one OS to the next, you should always erase your hard drive and re-install everything from scratch.
Of course, you should have not updated to Leopard at least until Apple released their Studio 2 updates. This message has been repeated on this very forum dozens of times since the Leopard release date was announced.

Nope. Apple is notoriously secret about any sort of updates, especially to the Studio package.

November 7, 2007 at 3:44 amHey Michael, this happened in Tiger too. Perhaps the same steps will help, but who knows. You basically have to delete compressor and then reinsall compressor (which also reinstalls Final Cut). That reinstall would then break Motion, so when you go to do this, amke sure to uninstall motion as well then when going to reinstall check compressor and motion (just the app, not the motion media), then download the updates. Read BOTH of these first before doing anything:

Hope this helps.

November 7, 2007 at 4:27 amSo, you all are saying that somewhere Apple has specifically said,
“FCP or FCS2 is not compatible with Leopard”? Where is that exactly? If someone walked into an Apple Store last Monday (or for the last week
for example) and said “I want a complete FCS system”.
Are you saying Apple would tell them, “Sorry, our current shipping
operating system does not work with our current shipping Professional
editing system, therefore we can’t sell you an 8 core Mac Pro that would
have Leopard installed because FCS won’t run on it”. So we can’t make as
$8000 sale to you (Mac Pro, a couple of monitors, FCS).
Really? That’s what they would say?Dan

Nobody EVER said that, and there is no such statement from Apple.
What people like Walter and others are saying, is purely personal opinion based on past experience. There concurs are perfectly valid, because ANY application can have problems if you move to an new OS that the program was not originally developed for, take for example the issues with Adobe products on the new OS.
Is it the fault of the new OS? Absolutely not. Those applications ran fine on the current OS available at the time of the programs release. Take that fish and place it in a different pond, and things may not work quite right.
Walter says wait for updates to be released for the FCS applications, because he is douse not want to risk loosing productivity in his business while dealing with potential bugs. MANY people have that opinion.
SO CHILL OUT MAN.
Think of a new OS as a pair or pants or a new pair of shoes, until they are broken in they are not as comfortable as the old ones.

November 7, 2007 at 3:05 pmIt’s not really a chill out situation. I just keep reading opinions here
like they are fact. If Apple wants it’s professional users to wait until
they do updates, why don’t they tell their professional users that?
Why do we have to guess? With new versions of FCP, absolutely I wait until the smoke clears.
So if people are saying the same thing related to Leopard, and
what they really mean is wait until Leopard has calmed down,
well that’s fine but not the same thing.Dan
