I am looking at lens options for the HDX900.
    Is anyone using this lens?
    Canon HJ17ex7.6B-WRSE e-HDxs
It has manual focus but I notice that a lot of lenses are using Servo focus.
I am used to Manual focus. What are the Pros and Cons with the Servo focus set up?

    Randy,

Servo focus is mainly intended for studio configuration on a pedistal tripod where the operator views through a viewfinder mounted above and behind the camera (although there is also a manual focus rig for this setup) so he can no longer even reach the lens to focus, or could be used on a jib rig if you also have the proper servo focus control (in lieu of seperate Bartec or Preston focus rig). Most jib operators have the focus motor rig because it’ll work on all the Canon, Fujinon and motion picture lenses that they are called upon to use with supplied cameras. The built in servo focus costs quite a bit more and adds weight to a camera you’ll probably want to hand hold, so it’s probably not a good idea!

One thing we do a lot with the manual focus lens is set a Preston motor onto the rods instead of the focus wheel control. Either the Preston or Bartech have good response which almsot perfectly duplicated the movement of the control wheel. Even on a tripod or dolly these wireless systems:
    a. prevent the assistant from inputting unwanted movement by moving the lens, especially in a fast/long focus change
    b. Allow the assistant to stand where they can see distances/marks more clearly/allow the assistant to get off the dolly to make movement and operation easier.
