I am dong a logo project for someone who wants the background to remain white and the text black. There is an instance in which i need a light ray to appear and flash across the writing, i wanted to use lens flare but it won’t appear on the white background. Is there a way i can get round this or a similar effect i can use?

Dave is correct, however you can make a faux flare by multiplying itself on the white areas. Use the text as an alpha so you don’t multiply it over the text or it will disappear from the text area.

You may need to make more than one multiply layer, and possibly use and additional keyframe-able soft vector alpha to keep the heavier components of the flare in check.

I forgot this isn’t Photoshop. 🙂 You’ll have to render your flare against black first and extract an alpha from it before you can try my approach.
