I was wondering if there is anyway to attach the lenst flare effect to a motion path/mask, so I could make it animate rather than keying every twist and turn. I think it would be easier and look smoother on a path.

Im want the lens flare to travel along an elliptical path (a halo on a tilt).

I might also be trying to animate this in a 3D layer, so the flare would be going away from the viewer at some point then coming toward the viewer as it comes back around.

    Im using after effects 6.5.

    any ideas

    Very easy…

Copy the “mask shape” and paste into the “flare center”. Now the lens flare should be keyframed and follow the path of your mask. Unfortunately masks only work in 2D.

Some people do not know this, maybe you do…..but if you double click the layer that holds the lens flare, then in the source layer window that opens, under target, select lens flare…this will allow you to play with the bezier points of the motion path of the lens flare. This should enable you to achieve your results with far less keyframes.
If you already knew this, then I am sorry to have wasted your time 🙂

Hi Mark, I’m afraid I don’t quite understand how to attach the lens flare to a layer through target source… I couldn’t find as you described in CS5.5… can you explain it to me again?

    i’d greatly appreciate it.

I’m kinda an AE novice and I don;t completly get how to create a mask (matte?) in AE as it is in Photoshop… but so far the only way i’ve been able to animate the flare is by putting the effect on an adjustment layer, creating a light source (anything other than ambient), and applying an expresion “thisComp.layer(“Light 1″).toComp([0,0,0])” where “Light 1” corresponds to the name of that light… only problem is that if I didn’t intend to have a light source… I get the light effect and any shadows it produces…
