    Hi all

I am rendering image sequences out of Maya, with a seperate render for the z depth channel. I have then been using the z depth sequence as a depth map with AE7’s Lens Blur filter, similar principle as andrew kramers dof tutorial.

Here is the problem though, its fine when ure dpeth map is a ramp or something but when it has an object in the foreground with a straight sharp edge, the blur comes out crap. The problem is that ae blurs that object correctly, but the blur is strictly within this sharp object so the result is very unrealistic ie. the object in the front is quiet blurred, but still has a relatively clean sharp edge.

Is there any way around this? I know that you can purchase something like lenscare but that is not a viable option for me at the moment. Is there a way of getting some realism in the dof being generated, or is this just another one of ae’s limitations?

Any ideas would be of great help!

    Cheers

There should be an option in the Blur plug-in to INVERSE the blur map, or you can apply a channel inverse to the depth matte and then precompose.

    Thanks,

Hey andrew, i dont how see why that would help (i gave it a shot anyway but with no results).

I have an object in the foreground and some objects in the background that are quiet far away. So on the depth map, the foreground object is quiet bright and has a distinct sharp edge. When inversed, that edge is just as sharp and even when the iris radius is crancked way up, although the object is extremely blured inside the edges, the actual edge of it is still quiet sharp, nothing like what you would get with a real bokeh.

Short of trying to seperate the original sequence into seperate layers and bluring them individually, is there any way around this? Let me know if i am not making myself clear enough…

    Cheers

Can you upload a still frame of your depth matte and image?

zhenka, I had the same issues with it. I ended up just putting a 1 or 2 pixel gauss blur on the z dpeth map just to make the edges vague enough to be usable. Not an ideal solution though.

Yes, i think that i will just create a composite depth map, where a portion of it will be preblurred whilst the necessary regions will remain sharp. This will work for this shot as it is static, with camera shake only added later, but for other shots it might be a real pain.

Just when i though that it they had it all worked out…..

    Thanks guys
