I got to meet Professor H. this week and talk with him briefly. He’s still sharp as a tack and working to push his technology even further:

Besides advancing the state of the art in communications and lighting, doctors are finding that IR LED’s can actually speed healing in the body. There is an enzyme inside the mitochondria of your cells – the so-called “powerplant” of the cell – that shifts its energy production into higher gear when light penetrates thru the skin and hits the cells. In a certain IR range, LED’s efficiently activate this process, speeding healing and re-growth, flushing out cellular wastes and poisons, rejuvinating tissues and alleviating pain. No, this does not mean you should sunbathe using your camera’s light!;-)

It does mean we’re at 50 years with this tech and still learning the limits of what it might do.

No, more like a gizmo, something like a wand or contoured plate with a handle on the back, and an array of the special LED’s that you place over the damaged spot like an icy hot heat wrap patch, and treat for 30 minutes or so, for several sessions. There’s a podiatrist in my town using this now for ankle problems and circulatory problems in diabetics, and while at first you’d suspect some quackery, the science underlying the device is strictly legit. NASA is using a variant of this in testing now as a potential healing tool to use in long duration space missions. Very Star-Trek-y.
