Reading some of the posts today, I came across this:

“Wave World + Caustics = headache of a render… although it does look pretty =)”

It was in reference to Wave World needing a second effect to make it show up. (Hence: Caustics. Or maybe it was the other way around.)

I had previously tried to use Caustics — I’m new to AE and was just trying things out at random basically. Anyway, nothing happened. Nothing I could see anyway.

How does one go about learning what certain effects do? My method — poking around — wasn’t working in many cases.

I’ve been dissecting some .aep files, and that’s been helpful. And I know many CS3 books aren’t out yet, or at least weren’t when I looked a few weeks ago.

    Any suggestions?

I would suggest that AE is the most fun thing you can do on a computer and the best way to learn is to get in there and PLAY…also A. Rabinowitz’s Podcasts are a great way to learn

Well, let me be a bit more clear. I AM playing — that’s how I ended up trying to apply “Caustics” to an image. But nothing happened. Now I’m trying to use Water World, and while I can generate the waves, I can’t get them to distort anything.

I don’t know if I’m misusing the pre-comp, the Displacement Effect, or if the layers are simply in the wrong order. The Help has been unhelpful. Aharon’s tutorials, which I’ve been watching since before I got AE CS3, are fantastic, but they aren’t helping me here, and I don’t know where to turn.

I’d rather not come here and be a burden with every question I have, especially when there might be a resource that has the answers.

(I’m sorry is this is coming off as snarky. I’m feeling snarky, but it has nothing to do with you, or this. It has to do with my DSL, so sorry if it’s bleeding over.)

[mikederk] “The Help has been unhelpful.”

Mike, you have the ear (or eyes, really) of the person who can fix the Help document. Would you be willing to talk with me about exactly what sorts of problems you’re having and what information you think is missing? If so, email me at kopriva [at] adobe [dot] com.
