When I started using my G5 with FCP 4.5…I was having issues. Issues I wasn’t having with my G4. And I did EVERYTHING I could think of…everything. To the point of erasing the internal drive (after backing up everything) and reinstalling the OS from scratch, and FCP from scratch…and while installing FCP…it crashed. KERNAL PANIC. Then I tried installing the OS again…CRASH…kernal panic. Took it in and it turned out to be a bad processor (Dual 2Ghz G5).

    I had received a lemon.

BUT, I troubleshot the issue for 2 days…pulling out every trick in the book. It came down to hardware.

Typically when I run into issues I find out that trashing the preferences usually helps…or if it persists, I dig and dig and find out that I indeed did something wrong. BUT, you don’t hear about it because I don’t post about it. I have issues…I just resolve those issues. Well, not ALL of them…I do post questions occasionally. You can do a search…I have issues that pop up. NO ONE IS UNAFFECTED. Just some less than others because they know more about how the system and FCP works, or they dug in and fixed the issue.

As a matter of fact, I had an issue the other day reguarding P2 footage import and I even blogged about it.

    https://blogs.creativecow.net/node/301

Did I ask for help? Yes….but not here. I knew that Raylight would help me with the issue so I e-mailed Raylight. But this was a question that easily would have popped up here on on the P2 forum. But I because I have a bit of experience with P2 and really wanted to solve this myself…I stuck with it. If I hit a dead end no DOUBT I would have gone to the forums. And I almost did, until I had a sudden brainstorm.

But I have had issues that I couldn’t figure out and I have asked for help. And if someone says “hey, you are doing all the stuff I do, and it works for me,” then I re-examine what i am doing and try to figure out where I went wrong. I have found that wrong turn before…and If I haven’t and it persists…WIPE AND INSTALL.

helps to have two internal drives to work with.

Seriously. If you read the original statement, in context, you can clearly see that I wasn’t making any specific accusation or even a generalization. I think if you read my whole post clearly, the implication is clear that folks here are NOT those aforementioned punks. (I posit that FCS has the ability to bring folks out of it..)

Specifically, I was referring to the apple.com forums (as well as other, non FCP forums) but here you came out of the woodwork to prove my exact point. If my statement paints me in a negative light to some, apparently it does that itself, it doesn’t need you to come out and point it out.

Furthermore, you final paragraph proves that you are exactly that kind of poster by implying that I either have a lemon or are doing something wrong. (Unless you were being ironic, in which case, I’m sorry if I didn’t pick up on the humor…)

My issues with final cut are very well documented,** and to imply that I’m doing something wrong is proving that you are, in fact, one of those aforementioned ‘punks.’

Another responder to this thread who called himself an “old punk” (though again, if you reread the original post, I wasn’t even calling anybody around here punks) ISN’T EVEN ON FCS2 YET BECAUSE OF TECHNICAL ISSUES. SIX MONTHS AFTER IT SHIPPED.

And, yeah, it is frustrating as a x-windows user to come over here after hearing the marketing hype about how Macs ‘Just Work’ for so long and finding out that’s not true at all, simply by viewing the lengths and processes people go to based on past experiences in this thread ALONE.

But I WORK in advertising. I understand that Advertising != truth– but it’s annoying when users who have been brainwashed by said advertising spit it back in your face and say “you must be doing something wrong” just because you don’t have the exact same issues.

(*losing renders, although the ‘workaround’ with duplicated sequences is not 100% effective, the absolutely useless conform in Color, abysmal Motion render template/compressor performance using FCP timeline. etc.. etc.. etc..)

I didn’t come here to pick a fight. Furthermore, if you actually read my previous post with a fresh mind, you’ll see it’s genuinely thankful. If the single ‘punks’ reference made you react so defensively, maybe you should examine YOUR attitudes when it comes to your responses.

It is no help whatsoever to anyone at anytime to say “I’m not having any problems, it must be you.” unless you happen to have the exact same configuration and follow some reproducible steps. Otherwise you’re just rubbing salt in a wound, and that’s just plain rude.

    (Thanks again to everyone else.)

I just got a really cheap 1TB firewire drive to copy all media and files over to and am using the upcoming leopard launch as a way to ‘clean house’ so to speak.

First, I’m going to install it on my wife’s macbook. Routine upgrade, not a fresh install. It’s the ‘experimental’ computer.

Then I’m going to play with it. I’m going to find out how it will improve my life. I’m going to say “thank god, they did do more than just ‘stacks’ and ‘time machine’ and tiny little maintinance thingees. I’m going to listen to my bluetooth stereo headphones that have been collecting dust for six months. I’m going to be so pleased by how useful updated mail is. I’m gonna notice how much faster everything runs. I”m also going to call my friends on ichat and do that Star Wars hologram thingee. I will then install it on my mother and sister’s computers.

Then I”m gonna sit on it a week and wait for the deluge of posts from people with major problems and the responses about how nobody is having any problems.

Oh, and then, hopefully they’ll upgrade iPhone software to 2.0 – including things like MMS, Push email, bluetooth stereo, and ichat. Then I will buy an iphone.

Then I will walk into a field of daisies and lay down for an eternal rest, because everything in my life will be complete.

First of all, absolutely do not do an update over Tiger.

Secondly, many will say to back up your old system first then do a clean install. I say don’t even bother. Just remove the Tiger system disk and put it on a shelf. Install Leopard on a brand new SATA disk (they’re like $80 or less). That is the only way to go. Now you’re only 5 minutes away from reverting to your old system.

Why remove it? Just install a 2nd drive and make that your new system drive. Now you’re just a Restart away from reverting to your old system. That’s what we’ve done here with our systems.

Don’t forget to have the soundtrack from Gladiator playing in the background. Anything else would be almost…..blasphemous.

[CoryTV] “If the single ‘punks’ reference made you react so defensively, maybe you should examine YOUR attitudes when it comes to your responses.”

Who’s defensive? Jeeze, that’s a classic case of projection if there ever was one. You can’t fix your computer or figure out who ask for help, so you blame Apple and all their hype: how dare they advertise that their computers work. Then, its everyone whose computer works better than your own: they rub it in, they’re punks. And now its me: I have attitude, I’m defensive, I must self-examine. Phew!!! If I didn’t spend half my life helping others to fix their technical issues you might have had me concerned for moment.

Meanwhile, I guess all the rest of us whose FCP systems work must just be idiots? Maybe there’s hope for us if we just agree with everything you say and complain more?

Yeah! None of that flutey/violiney Return of the King crap.

Although…I wouldn’t mind fading away to the Star Trek II credits music (the James Horner stuff)- back before they got this idea to use heavy “evening news” sounding brass in Next Generation. Actually, now that I think about it, Next Generation’s theme came from Star Trek 5, right? Or was it Star Trek the motion picture? Next Generation’s theme music came from somewhere, and it was crap.

I don’t consider “Enterprise’s” theme music to be an actual Star Trek score. I’m pretty sure that was just a Toni Braxton b-side track they licensed for about $20. Please don’t play that during my field of daisies death scene.

God. I used to be cool.

[Arniepix] “Personally, I run a complete backup of my system drive before I do any upgrades, either Mac OS or any major apps. That way, you can always go back to your last known working status without having to jump through hoops.”

Yep, I just figured that was self-explanatory but thanks for putting that out there.

Of course, installing a 2nd drive makes all of this easier too. Just install everything on the 2nd drive and make that your new System Drive.

Then when OS X “Tabby Cat” comes out in ’09 you can just install that onto the original System Drive. Then just switch back to the 2nd System Drive when OS 11 “Horse” comes out in ’10. Switch back for OS 11 “Trotter” Switch again for OS 11 “Palamino” Switch again for OS 11 “Thoroughbred” And finally get a new machine when OS 12 “Hamster” is released.
