LCD TV/Monitor for editing
Posted by Ken Weiss on May 20, 2006 at 3:39 pmI know that the pro’s out there wouldn’t use an LCD screen to monitor output, but my work is not broadcast quality and I’m tired of the big box on my desk. Iunderstand the shortcomings, but it’s time for me to make the change. Is anyone out there using an LCD monitor with FCP? Any recommendations. I’ve been looking at the Sharp Aquos and the Sony. I’m running a quad 2.5. Thanks.

Sounds like you’re working in SD not HD. If so, you’ll be pretty unhappy using a HD LCD TV as a monitor. The Aquos line is especially horrible at displaying SD. Sony does a better job with SD as it does not upconvert the signal to 1080i for display, but still not a great way to make your SD video sparkle.

I’ll second that.
I’m running a Panasonic Professional Plasma 50″ HDTV in our shop and putting regular SD on it looks pretty bad. Our little $89 SD CRT TV has a better SD image than the plasma. HD looks flat out amazing, but SD is definitely a very weak link in HD displays.

May 20, 2006 at 4:35 pmAre you both saying that a regular non HD LCD display is better than an HD LCD for my SD work? I’ve been using a Sony Wega 20″ CRT all this time so that’s what I’ll be comparing to the LCD. I may eventually move to HD but now all I’m really doing is slideshows from pics, so i’m not really using FCP the way most of you are.

If you can find a SD LCD TV that will absolutely work better for SD. SD LCDs are getting pretty tough to find now.
BTW, I doubt we’re really relatives Ken, but if you want to put me in your will or adopt me or something I won’t complain.
All the best,

May 20, 2006 at 6:35 pmI’ll probably get yelled at for saying this, but my SD images look fine on this HD monitor coming out of a Kona 2.

It’s a 37in Sceptre brand LCD HDTV for $1500.
A while back I had some issues with dancing pixels on HDV footage if you do a search posts with my name, however, a friend with the same monitor told me about a secondary menu option that fixed my issue.
HD footage looks awesome, SD footage (out of the Kona, mind you) looks great, too. I use if for HDV, SD, HD, and even did a slideshow last week for a show being pressed to DVD. SD does not look AS good as a CRT – but it really doens’t look as good on any LCD.
If all you’re doing is slideshows, it’s a solid option. When you’re done you can play XBOX 360, too. Sounds like a win/win to me…
Cheers!

May 21, 2006 at 2:42 amHey, if the 20″ Sony is too big and boxy, why not just downconvert to the 14″ Sony CRTs. They look spectacular with all SD video and will show you all that chroma crawl or field issues before you send it to tape. They are a rock solid product and you can probably find one for about $400-$500. I would not buy ANY LCD or other flat panel for SD work as a monitor. Stick with a CRT. It is the only monitor that will show you true interlaced video and will reveal field issues right away.
Lose the 20″ CRT, sell it on ebay, and with the money, buy a 14″ and have money left over.

May 21, 2006 at 8:04 pmThe Panasonic BT-LS1400 does a fine job with SD video. List price around $1,250.

May 22, 2006 at 1:46 amI’ll bet a “fine job” isn’t really good enough, and no where near as good as a Sony 14″ CRT for Standard Def. Remember, the guys is asking to simply gain some desk space and he currently has a behemoth Sony 20″ CRT. Let’s get this guy the right monitor for his standard def needs….get a CRT.

May 22, 2006 at 11:25 amThanks for the input. I’ll check out the Panasonic. I appreciate the kind words about the Sony, but I just don’t do any video work that needs color correction at all. I know that’s heresy but my work is ALL slideshows, at least right now. But I will check out the Sony, just to be sure.
