I was wondering if anyone has a preference on LCD monitors for preview. I use Vegas 6.0d’s preview monitor feature to view playback on my cheap Sony CRT. Obviously this is not a great choice because I color correct on it but when my final DVD gets played on a plasma or LCD TV, all the colors are way off.. Sometimes even disturbing. Does anyone recommend a solution? What monitors are good for color correcting (Other than broadcast types).

    Any feedback is appreciated.

    Thanks…

Yeah, most cheap LCD monitors are made for gaming, with real short pixel response times, like 5ms. The problems with cheap monitors is that they simulate part of the color spectrum, so what you see isn’t the full RGB gamut. You want to look for a TFT display that specifies that its color gamut is 8 bit’s per channel with 24 million colors. Response times on these LCD’s run around 20-30ms, not as good for gaming, but, essential for CC work. I’m real happy with my Samsung SyncMaster 215TW. Cost ~$500.

You, also, want to be sure to calibrate your monitor with a good display spectrophotometer like the monaco spyder for the ultimate in color control.

You can do what you want to CC but ultimately you are at the mercy of your client and their usually uncalibrated display. I reallly hate spending all that time anfd work to CC and have it look like cr## when the client plays it. Of course many of them don’t seem to care:>))

Wow! I learned something here. I always thought we needed to look for a short response time on a flat panel for displaying the video. Haven’t bought one yet but I was always looking for 2ms to 5ms response time.

Your saying your monitors run in the 20-30ms? I agree about the color spectrum but how are your monitors for the video work or can’t we have our cake and eat it too?

I do a lot of still image phtography where accurate color representation is critical. You make a really good point about the poor calibrations at customers, I’ve found the same to be true. Nevertheless, I’ve experienced no ghosting of videos due to long refresh times. I guess you pick your compromise, and go with it. No doubt about it, there is an advantage to inexpensive monitors…the cost.
