    Hi all,

I have been shooting a lot of interviews lately for my documentary, and was thinking that having a small LCD panel that I can hold in my hand for reference might be nice, especially when I am the sole shooter and I want people to be positioned on the left of the frame while I am standing on the right of the camera to get good eyeline. Since I can’t see the LCD screen of the DVX-100 from that position, I would use this type of monitor for proper framing in case the subject moves, instead of lunking around my Sony 9″ CRT monitor that has to sit on the floor.

Does anyone have a good LCD that would work in this situation? Also, it would be really nice to have one that is powered by the DVX-100’s batteries (I have a Citizen LCD 3″?? monitor that uses a boatload of AA batteries, or is powered by electric, neither of which is appealing to me).

It would be really nice to only have to bring one set of batteries that is rechargeable to these interviews. (I also have the Sony NP-900 batteries, if there is an LCD option for them).

    Thanks,

    Lane Wyrick

Nebtek.com makes an adapter to let you do this. Also Markertek.com has one.

    Thanks Mitch!

I checked out both websites, and they both seem to offer about the same item, a convertor for Panasonic (and other) camcorder batteries (specifically the 7.2 volt ones we use) to DC power.

Now my question is, I already have this Citizen 3″ LCD monitor and it has a “DC in 9V” on the side, which is a thin plug. Will this kind of adapter work with an LCD that needs a 9 Volt input, and is it possible to get an adapter to the plug to convert it to this thin size so it will fit?

    Thanks again,

I don’t think it will work. A 7.2v battery will top out at about 7.8v, and a 9v in item will likely cut off around 8v, so if it does juice it it won’t for very long.

I know the little citizen and frankly it’s not that great. I’d suggest bumping up to the 7″ Panasonic screen, which is vastly superior. If that’s too expensive, perhaps the cheapest way to go is some rechargeable LiIon AA batteries and a charger. I assume it takes 4 cells at a time and that will likely run you a couple of hours of continuous use, so get a set of 16 cells and an 8-slot charger and you’ll be good to go. Probably less than $50 at Best Buy.

Thanks again. I’ll check out the Best Buy option for AA rechargeable batteries.

After my last post, I realized I have a portable Toshiba DVD player with a 7″ screen with a rechargeable battery built in. It’s a little bit more cumbersome to hold during an interview, but now I guess I can have two options, depending on if I need small size or a larger picture.

    All the best,

Have you tried using your portable DVD player as a monitor (via video out)? I’ve been considering buying one just for that purpose, but wasn’t sure it’d work. There are several brands with screens up to 10″, and something that size sure would make a nice reference monitor.
