LCD Displays
Posted by Shane O’brien on January 11, 2009 at 2:50 amHi there,
I’m looking to buy a new LCD display for an FCP editing suite. I currently have an old 23″ cinema display, which has now bit the dust. I would replace it with an Apple, but it doesn’t seem cost effective considering the price of Dell’s, Samsung’s etc. I am looking for a 24″ display.
I just wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations from the current batch of displays available? The one thing I would like is a display with a height adjustable stand.
Note, I have a separate JVC monitor for colour correction.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Shane

January 11, 2009 at 9:48 amI am using a 28″ Hanns G we bought from Newegg next to a little 19″ dell. We paid nearly $600 for the 28″ but I just saw it on Newegg last week for $350 with free shipping! They went back up to nearly $400 without shipping last week though. $350 total for a 28″ 1920 x 1080 monitor is an amazing deal!
Anyways, I am still learning but as far as editing real estate I would recommend getting two of these and hooking them up to your new 8 core!
I plan on having 8 of these someday soon!

January 17, 2009 at 8:03 amThe input is much appreciated. Sorry it’s taken me a while to reply here – I ended up getting distracted with some other work this past week.
The 2408… I looked it up on some forums. There seemed to be quite a few negative comments about lag time and the brightness / colour… in particular, that the reds were very poor. Does anyone know how accurate that it?
I am happy to buy the 2408 (which I think is $699 in Canada), but only if it’s substantially better than the cheaper, basic 24″ displays like the Samsung 2443. Otherwise, if they all have issues, I might as well just go with a cheaper option.
Many thanks!

Cheaper monitors tend to not display text crisply which will make your eyes grow tired much more quickly while editing. There is a distinct difference between our $900 Dell 24″ and our $200 Viewsonic / Samsung 24″ monitors that we use. The Dells are our primary monitors as we put the main timelines and such on those and then we use the Viewsonic / Samsungs for bins and extra stuff.

January 29, 2009 at 1:03 amI’ve been following the Monitor threads for about a month now and this seems to be the consensus with regard to LCD’s.
– For best value for the money, the JVC DT-V24L3DU is it at $3500 (B&H)
– For best value (non-color grading) the Dell 2408WFP is it at around $850 (street).
That seems to be it for high value LCD’s. Word has it that the Panasonic LCD that’s a mainstay of color grading LCD’s has more signal latency (lag) that the JVC.
My question is this. In a scenario where the edit station already has one 23″ ACD or Dell 2408, can the JVC DT-V24L3DU be used as the main editing window then used for color grading or is a three screen (2 edit and 1 Color grading) the only viable option? -

Don’t buy it on the street then Archie, cuz Dell sells thme for $689.

Not the only option, but the only really good option.

January 29, 2009 at 2:21 amOne last question.
Does anyone know if the Dell 2408WFP does 1:1 scaling? -

January 29, 2009 at 7:08 pmFabulous Andy! Great review link BTW. Getting closer yet to a 2408WFP buy.Any idea what version firmware it ships from Dell with these days?
I know that you had sent another questioner to a great site that listed MATROX MX02 Compatibilities with various monitors or was I dreaming? can’t find it now.
Anyway. Now I know what needs to be bought.Just hope that the offerings don’t change too much in March/April, when I predict that several new monitors will emerge. It’s silly that Apple hasn’t bothered to keep up with Dell and that JVC really can’t offer a monitor for sell than 3 Grand.
