Layers in layers palette don’t have objects available to select
I frequently have this problem when I receive product layouts from clients.
When I open the file in illustrator there are layers in the layers palette which contain multiple objects but I can’t twirl the layer open to directly select objects from the layers palette. If I create a new layer this problem remains.
What causes this?
Very frustrating and time consuming when I need to separate elements for use in after effects.

If you open the panel drop down (arrow top right of panel) you’ll find “layer options” at the bottom of the menu. Click that and then uncheck “show layers only”.
