  • Layer style kills shape layer on pre-comp/collapse

Posted by Sam Vargas on October 23, 2008 at 9:44 am

    Hi,
I struggle for long time to find out what causes my shape layers to disappear if I pre-compose them and then turn on collapse transformations on the precomp. Well, the answer is layer styles. (This seems to be an important fact, however there’s not many places mentions this – as manual does not.)
My question is, of course, that is there a solution for this? I would really like to keep those sharp edges on scaling the precomp but because I used gradient overlay or emboss or whatever this becomes impossible – the shape layer disappears from the precomp on the level above.
    Thank you for any help,
    Sam

There are known limitations with Layer Styles. What you need to do is to not use Collapse Transformations. Therefore, enlarge your shape layers before nesting them into your ‘final comp’.
