  • Latest results in sub-“pro” HD monitors?

I’ve done the Search, and have read a lot about people trying some new HD monitors for field and editing studio, including some sub-$1000 Panasonic and Sony models from Costco. I think Frank Nolan, for one, promised to report on his adventures with Sony, but if he has followed up yet, I missed it.

There was even a remark, from reputable sources, that the sub-$1000 models from Panasonic rival their pro models which cost 3x that. Any more observations? I have also read that “pro work demands pro monitors,” but hope dawns eternal in the heart of the editor looking to save some bucks.

Hey Bob, I got one of those Sony 17″ monitors from Fry’s fo about $600, and when I send HD projects to it it looks really good. SD images suck on it, but then, I have my Sony NTSC monitor for that.I wouldn’t trust it for Color correction, but for editing and clients to look at, it’s pretty darn good.

Yep, we use the same monitor here for monitoring our 1200A playback in our rack unit during mastering or dubbing. Great picture. Sometimes show blockiness in the blacks that is not really there, but for just monitoring video, good little monitor.

Keep in mind if you’re going out in the field, this unit only has RCA connectors which do not always hold up well. They have a tendency to bend and break so be careful when you connect / disconnect cable.s
