I am using the DigiEffects Berserk Laser effect to create some blasts from a laser pistol. I think they look great, and the plugin does exactly what I need it to. However, it slows my computer to a crawl and makes my productivity take a nose dive. Watching the spinning rainbow wheel while my computer tries to render out this effect is driving me crazy. I feel like I shouldn’t be getting such a dramatic slowdown. I am working on an Apple G5, 4 x 2.5 GHz with 5 GB or RAM. Could I have some setting wrong, or does anyone know of a better plugin that does a similar thing? I am going crazy here! Thanks so much!

DigiEffects’ plug-ins are notoriously slow, this has been my experience with them and I believe other people’s as well. It is quite possible that you SHOULD be getting such a dramatic slowdown, there may be nothing wrong with your system or settings.

I looked at the PDF documentation of the Berserk Laser effect, it seems that this should be reproducible with the standard beam effect, circle, glow and transfer modes… would be much more work but you may literally make up for it in render time.

Hey, there is a pretty fast reliable decent looking filter I use for this. Check out the following link, the bundle comes wit 30 effects.
