Laser eye surgery
Posted by Chris Burster on October 27, 2008 at 9:02 pmAny AVID editors here have laser eye surgery done? I’m thinking about it but worried about the “Halo” that comes of light sources in dark rooms. If I can’t see the computer or TV monitors clearly what good would I be.

October 28, 2008 at 1:57 pmI don’t know any editors personally who have had it done, but I’m meeting with a Lasik surgeon this afternoon about doing his production. I’ll ask him about the Halo effect and how often it really occurs.
Michael.

October 28, 2008 at 10:03 pmI had LASIK done 11 years ago. The lasers and the optics technology that map your eyes were not as good as they are now. But I would never go back to the way I was before the laser eye surgery.
In my case I was extremely nearsighted (20/400) with moderate astigmatism. I wore Coke bottle thick lenses. Eleven years later I do wear glasses with a very thin lens (about 20/30), due to changes in my vision in more recent years. I don’t nead to wear reading glasses to see a computer screen or read a book.
My understanding is that the “halo” effect experienced by some who got early laser eye surgery, is very minimized or non-existent with today’s lasers. The only time I experience a “halo” effect is with very high contrast situations. White credits on a dark screen in a theatre, or looking at a full moon. For anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after the procedure is when you might have some residual effects, dry eyes etc. Some people I know have said that the following day their vision was perfect with no issues at all.
It is certainly a serious decision and from my perspective it worked well. I would recommend one of the following lasers.
Bausch & Lomb Zyoptix, or the Allegretto laser.
By the way, I’ve been doing a variety of videos on various kinds of laser eye surgery for many years and have seen and heard what ad gimmicks are working. I’d be happy to answer any further questions.

October 28, 2008 at 11:25 pmthe halos may bug you when driving at night or if you ever shoot in a night club with neons but you’ll not see halos on your monitors. You’ll have massive eye sstrain for a while. editing with shades helps emmensly. You may just keep doing this after your eyes adjust just cuz ya look cool.
