Mark Raudonis was the first to write here about bad bugs in Vegas, and it seems many at NAB caught the flu. Now, my ex-girlfriend was there over the weekend, and she has a bad case of the flu. Is Vegas becoming the newest incubator for epidemics like cruise ships and hospitals?

I caught a terrible case of food poisoning when I wax there last year, and I thought it was just an aberration, but now I’m beginning to wonder if this is potentially big news going unreported so as not to hurt the Vegas tourist trade?

Is anyone thinking of not returning to NAB next year because it’s such a germ fest?

Nope it’s the price of admission. I think it’s as much to do with the volume of people as with the dry air conditioning, too much party and not enough sleep. I was eating honey each morning and taking the party easy and came out with just a sore throat from gabbing.

I think of it like when Mikey was in elementary school. You WANT to confront Real World bugs so as to develop equivalent “Real World” immune systems.

Life can be messy. One path is to try to avoid the chaos – the other path is to confront it and even maybe embrace it.

    Caution? absolutely.

    Fear? Nope.

On Tuesday evening as we left the show, there was a dust storm with high winds. Over the next day or two the temperatures plummeted. This variation in temperature coupled with a large number of people in one hall exchanging the air they breathed, led to an epidemic.

I managed to come out unscathed, in part because I come from a crowded country and out here its very common at pilgrimages at large temples for outbreaks of various small and major communicable diseases to occur.

So we are used to the standard precautions of avoiding body contact (shaking hands counts too), and avoiding getting one’s hands anywhere near one’s nose or eyes, using generous amounts of hand sanitiser and carrying a sanitised kerchief to wipe one’s eye’s or nose.

I have a wicked sore throat this week just from reading NAB wrap-ups!

    Hey David,

No sickness for me, but I noticed a lot of people were not well. My problem with Vegas is that it is just becoming more and more disgusting to me. Or perhaps I’m just getting too old for it. I can’t take walking through another Casino filled with people in wheel chairs and oxygen tubes to the nose while smoking. And when a bottle of water costs $6, that’s just too greedy. I’d like to see it moved every other year to a different location but I don’t think that is possible with booths stored there and the amount of housing necessary to hold the attendees. Perhaps I’ll start alternating between NAB and IBC every other year.
