  • Larger Softbox Light Source

Hello, I am looking for a larger light source for interviews. I use a large Rifa, and love it, but want something bigger. I can’t afford the Chimera Senior & speedring. What options are there? I was thinking along the lines of buying a roll of frost and stretching it on some kind of frame in front of a light. Suggestions? Thank you.

Might try one of those bounce/diffusers on a twist-o-flex frame… the ones w/ a diffuser are like a 2-stop silk. Pour some light through it & you’ll have a 6 foot source. Or get a real silk on a frame & do the same thing. Not as good perhaps as a bank of Kinos, but….

    Bill,

To help get more softness from frost on a frame, try this:

Build a 4 sided box out of foam core, say 3′ by 3′. I would use black on white foamcore, black on the out side and white on the inside – this will cut down on reflection issues. Fit it with a 1″x2″ frame on the inside about 6″ from one end. Staple a peice of 216 (250, opal, gridcloth, users choice) to the 1″ frame. Lastly, mount a baby plate to the outside of one of the sides. Use this to attach to a c-stand (you might need to use 2 if it’s too heavy). Aim it at your subject and shine a light through it!

There you have it, a cheap soft box. The white foam core will help diffuse the light while the box will help to direct the light. It may not be the most portable, but what do you want for a few bucks?

    Good luck!

Rick, I like the way you think! For a studio setting, your box would work in terms of portabillity but I’m concerned about what audio reflexion I might get off the foamcore. This is something I can build for this project, giving me time to test it out.

The flex-fil option also sounds good and I’ll take a peek at that as well.

    Thank you both, — Bill
